Why Are My Brakes Grinding?

Mechanic Adjusting Brake Pad

Have you noticed that your brakes are making grinding noises during your Tulsa commute? Wondering to yourself, “Why are my brakes grinding and how do I fix it?” We’ve got the answers for you at James Hodge Toyota!

The sounds of brakes grinding when stopping or starting can indicate serious underlying problems with your braking system. In fact, the NHSA, or the National Highway Safety Administration, claims that faulty brakes could be responsible for as many as 25% of all road accidents. That’s why you’ll want to find out why your brakes are grinding as soon as possible. Then, visit our Muskogee Service Center to get the repairs you need expeditiously!

Why Are My Brakes Grinding When Driving?

Are your brakes making grinding noises while driving around McAlester? You could simply have debris or rocks making contact with your caliper and rotor. Although this is relatively simple to repair, you’ll want to take care of this sooner rather than later to prevent further damage. Our service members can remove this loose debris and have you back on Tahlequah roads within your lunch break!

Why Are My Brakes Grinding When Stopping?

If your brakes are grinding when stopping, then we have a vastly different problem on our hands. There are a couple of potential causes for that metallic scraping sound emitting from your braking system:

  • If you hear brakes grinding when stopping at full force, it could be your Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS). Your ABS will activate if you apply the full brakes, and it may even cause vibrations in the pedal.
  • If you hear a sharper grinding noise, it could be the sound of your brake disc and calipers. This may also cause a rumble in your pedal. This may require a brake pad replacement, but also disc or rotor replacement.
  • If you hear the sound when stopping or slowing down, your brake pads are probably the culprit. But over time, brake pads lose their thickness and start to make a squealing noise – known as “brake scrubbing.” As the pads wear down further, you’ll hear a grinding noise instead.
