While you’re browsing our new Toyota inventory, you’ll see a lot of models with “CVT” listed as a highlight feature. CVT is an acronym for Continuously Variable Transmission. So, the common question, “What is a CVT transmission?” is actually redundant. But, you probably have a few other questions, like how a CVT works and the benefits for your Tulsa commutes. Learn more information, below!
CVT stands for Continuously Variable Transmission, but they’re sometimes known by other titles, such as shiftless transmission, step-less transmission, or pulley transmission.
If you’re accustomed to automatic transmissions, you might be hesitant to embrace a CVT. You don’t need to worry about the change, because a CVT is technically a type of automatic transmission. Instead of fixed-gear ratios, the CVT uses infinitely variable ratios, two pulleys, and an interceding chain or belt. You’ll typically find CVTs in fuel-efficient vehicles like sedans and small SUVs. Large SUVs, trucks, and performance cars will typically have some type of 6, 8, 9, or 10-speed automatic transmission instead of a CVT.
The CVT is unique because it does not have high and low gears like regular transmissions. Rather, cone-shaped pulleys are utilized, connected via an intervening belt or chain. Within a CVT, there’s a fixed side that remains motionless. The other side moves in accordance with your speed, using a hydraulic cylinder. The cylinder adapts the distance between the pulley’s two sides, making the belt go higher or lower depending on your speed. Many McAlester drivers like CVTs because shift paddles are not necessary.
So, what is a CVT going to do to improve your daily driving experience? The biggest benefit of a CVT and the reason why so many automakers are embracing them is because of the way they can improve a vehicle’s efficiency. A CVT allows the engine to operate at the highest efficiency at all times because the CVT doesn’t need to switch between gears at all. Another advantage of a CVT is that there are fewer parts and a simpler design. So, if you ever need transmission service, the cost should be lower than if you had an automatic or manual transmission.
If the benefits of a CVT sound great to you, there are lots of Toyota models that offer a CVT! Here are some popular models that offer a CVT:
