The new 4Runner is a rugged off-road SUV that can hold the entire family, cargo, and anything you might want to stow in the spacious vehicle. Read on to learn everything there is to know about the 2022 Toyota 4Runner's features.
Guide to the 2022 Toyota 4Runner
The Toyota 4Runner has been in production since 1984 and remains one of the best off-road SUVs. The reason that this SUV is such a reliable and highly recommended vehicle is its tough ruggedness. Additionally, the rough-and-tumble build is perfect for those who like to get dirty.
All trims of the 4Runner sit at 9.6 inches high and are built on a truck-based platform. Most SUVs are built like cars; however, the 4Runner is built like a truck with a body-on-frame. Each 4Runner has a 270-hp 4.0-liter V-6 engine with a five-speed automatic transmission. The last version tested took 7.6 seconds to get to 60 mph.
2022 Toyota 4Runner Trims
All the trims now feature LED high beams, and a new TRD Sport model was added to the lineup. The TRD Sport is a good addition for those who like to go off-roading and have excellent control on the road as well. While Toyota added the TRD Sport trim, it dropped the Venture and Nightshade trims, focusing more on the vehicle's performance than looks.
The SR5 model is the 4Runner's standard trim. It is, however, more expensive than the average base trims of Toyota. It starts with an engine that is capable of 270 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque. The 4Runner has an average of 16 mpg in town and 19 mpg on highways. It features a Toyota Safety Sense P, Apple CarPlay and Android compatibility, and a power rear liftgate.
Trail Special Edition
The Toyota Trail Special Edition, compared to the standard models, is designed for more off-road experiences. The Yakima LoadWarrior cargo basket is a standard addition to this trim. Additionally, it comes with a 40-quart cooler that straps down in the cargo area. In the cargo area, you will find a sliding deck that contains storage underneath. This trim is unique to the line and is specifically designed for adventure-minded persons.
The SR5 Premium is said to be worth the upgrade. It comes with better features such as the SofTex-trimmed seats, a multi-media system that includes dynamic navigation with traffic updates and weather forecasts, and heated front seating. Additionally, it has a HomeLink Universal Transceiver and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.
TRD stands for Toyota Racing Development. Traditionally, the TRD division of Toyota takes care of the performance of race cars, but they have expanded their development to include off-road vehicles as well. The TRD packages include upgraded shocks, wheels, off-road suspension, and better fog lights. The TRD Off-Road does precisely what you would expect from a vehicle that is designed for an all-terrain vehicle. Compared to the other trims of the 4Runner, the TRD Off-Road has an optional 4WD and Craw Control to get out of those nasty spots.
Much like the SR5 Premium, the TRD Off-Road Premium offers similar luxuries, such as an upgraded entertainment system and better seating. However, with the TRD Off-Road Premium, you combine both worlds into one of both luxury and rugged capabilities.
There are some key differences between the TRD Off-Road Premium and the TRD Pro. First, the TRD Pro comes with high-performance shocks and upgraded springs. This means that you can do some serious off-roading without feeling too many bumps on the road. The 2022 line also adds the Standard Multi-Terrain Monitor for an even smoother off-road adventure. Additionally, the exclusive Lime Rush Color is added to the line as well.
The TRD Sport, newly added to the line of 4Runners, is not truly designed for off-roading. Instead, it is designed for better road driving. It includes the X-REAS, which automatically adjusts the shock when driving over rough terrain or taking sharp corners. The TRD Sport is available in both 2WD or the optional part-time 4WD. Additionally, the TRD Sport is designed for style and comfort. The interior has leather seating and unique gray stitching: the exterior sports a hood scoop, front spoiler, and roof rails.
The 4Runner Limited Edition is all about luxury. It sports an excellent surround sound system with subwoofers and amplifiers and has leather seats. Additionally, this vehicle also has parking assists for both the front and back. A unique feature of the Toyota 4Runner 2022 Limited is that it has the X-REAS sports enhancement suspension that allows for a better off-roading experience.
